VisualAge® for C++ |

|
| ImageScan begins its journey to discovering the many advantage of
VisualAge for C++ |

|
| For
banks that process thousands upon thousands of checks each day, ImageScan has been able to
provide a valuable software solution to help keep track of those checks and get them
processed quickly and efficiently. And although they've only been using VisualAge for C++
for eight months, ImageScan is quickly discovering the many benefits of object-oriented
technology. ImageScan Inc.,
located in Lanham, Maryland, has put more than one million dollars a year into the
development of its software products and providing solid customer support. While they're
still in the early stages of working with VisualAge for C++, it's already helping the
ImageScan developers meet the ever-increasing demands of producing their software.
ImageScan provides
"lockbox solutions" for some of the largest banking institutions in the U.S. The
lockbox is a service provided by a number of large banks to their corporate customers, and
is geared towards getting collection of payments sooner from the customers of the bank's
corporate clientele. With their unique software product, ImageScan helps make the
collection and processing cycle run faster and more efficiently.
|
| ImageScan's software captures the images of checks
and then displaysthem for various workflow processes on the OS/2 network. This information
will be called upon by the bank's operators for keying data from those checks for the preparation of daily reports that will be sent to the
bank's lockbox customers. It's critical in this department that there be as little
downtime as possible, otherwise checks will pile up and will not get deposited in time.
And because the processing of checks requires 100% accuracy, this dictates a need for a
mission-critical automation system that is efficient, high-quality and very reliable. A flexible and fully-integrated solution

| image manipulation or functions that cannot be accessed using another
language," explains Hanna Jabbour, ImageScan's Product Manager. "Because
VisualAge for C++ is highly-adaptable, it offers the flexibility we need." The Open Class Library provides
the ImageScan developers with a set of tools that have a consistent look and feel across
multiple platforms. Since none of the banks on ImageScan's growing client list are on a
single operating system, they rely on the capability of the VisualAge for C++ Open Class
Library. The ImageScan developers can use object-oriented user interface development
methodologies without rewriting or modifying existing code.
Says Jabbour, "I like the Open Class
Library because it means I only have to write my code once. Right now, we're doing
everything in OS/2 which is great for providing a stable, flexible, multi-threading and
multi-product environment. We're also planning on using VisualAge for C++ to help us move
to NT" in as short a time as possible without extensive rework, redesign or
rewrite."
The visual builder is another feature that
makes VisualAge for C++ a valuable tool in their application development process. It
provides database access simply by drawing a line between onscreen icons . no written code
is required. The visual builder also makes it easier to create prototype screens, allowing
ImageScan to review the work in progress, and provide their customers with a preview of
what the screens will look like.
|
Moving forward with VisualAge for C++ By the end of 1996, all ImageScan
software products will be written in VisualAge for C++. This will include the creation of
all objects for image display, transmission of data and images, balancing of invoices and
checks and printing images.
And how do they stack up against the
competition? ImageScan President, Tom Scott reveals, "As far as I know, we're the
only shop of our kind using VisualAge for C++. Our competitors just couldn't handle the
same volume and performance requirements with the application development products they're
currently using."
As ImageScan continues to explore the many
advantages VisualAge for C++ has to offer, they're taking advantage of IBM's solid support
service and VisualAge training programs.
"We're counting on seeing many
benefits in the future with VisualAge for C++," says Scott. "I anticipate that,
in a year from now, VisualAge for C++ and the reuse of objects will help dramatically in
cutting down our development time."
Stay tuned to the ImageScan story
To date, the developers at ImageScan have been pleased
with the results they've seen with VisualAge for C++ over the last eight months. We'll
continue to follow their story in the months ahead. Stay tuned! |
